Gal Gun Returns requires some explanation. As a video game, however, it struggles to remain pertinent, in part due to its uneasy voyeuristic gameplay and in part due to tired, recurring light-gun-style shooting.
The story of Gal Weapon Returns follows Tenzou Motesugi, an average high school young boy who does not have much luck on the dating scene. One day, an angel-in-training, Patako, shoots her angelic blaster at Tenzou, in order to make him appealing to the opposite sex (you see, all seniors at Angel Academy should give a designated human a “day in the sun” in order to graduate). The issue: instead of one angelic arrow, more than enough to make any human alluring, Patako fires sixteen.
This bonkers story is one of the better parts of Gal Gun Returns. While the gameplay aspects it triggers are bothersome– more on that later on– the situations it inspires are silly, subversive, and at times very funny. The verbal exchanges in between Tenzou and Patako are especially good, and come to life thanks to some outstanding localization work from the Inti Develops team.
The gameplay, on the other hand, is rather poor. Gal Weapon Returns is a rail shooter that plays like Time Crisis or Your House of the Dead. You’ll stroll through numerous generic high school settings in a first-person point of view, intending a reticle over swarming schoolgirls and targeting their sensitive spots to provide euphoria. That’s generally it. The action feels outdated and shallow.
Now, there are some twists. Each girl has a specific weak spot where a direct Scent Shot will set off immediate euphoria. If you’re replaying a project looking for a high score, you can try to take advantage of these weak points. There’s Doki Mode. By giving women euphoria, you’ll fill your Heart Gauge. When it reaches 1, you can trigger Doki Doki, which pulls a chosen woman into a separate screen. Here you can focus on the lady’s erotic locations in 360 degrees and give them euphoria.
Doki Doki Mode is bothersome for a couple of reasons. One, it bores and undemanding. You’re just zooming in and shooting more body parts. Two, it makes the video game uncomfortably voyeuristic. Sure, all of Gal Gun Returns is designed with fan service in mind, however Doki Mode feels extremely intimate and intrusive. It’s intensified by the reality that some of Tenzuo’s would-be girlfriends are young-looking underclassmen.
Gal Gun Returns is at its finest when it focuses on mini-games unique to each of Tenzuo’s 4 crushes: Kaname, Akira, Kaoruko, and Aoi. There’s poolside training with Akira, where you must shoot iron balls bearing down on you; song composing with Aoi, where you require to shoot the lyrics you think are correct; and numerous more. The best of the lot gets here in Kaoruko’s campaign, where Tenzuo requires to posture nude for an art class and after that shoot on-screen sheep to prevent falling asleep– just the kind of screwy circumstance that makes the video game memorable, if absolutely nothing else.
There’s a good quantity of content in Gal Gun Returns, although not all of it is worthwhile. The heart of the game is Story Mode, which can be played in one of 4 routes– one for each crush.

Other choices consist of Rating Attack, where you play through the distinct areas of each main route, or attempt private areas for high ratings; Collection, where you can see any earned titles and pictures of all the game’s ladies; Dressing Space, where you have the alternative to alter clothing and devices for the girls; and Gallery, where you can see and unlock idea art and illustrations. Gal Weapon Returns has some issues, but replay value is not one of them.
In terms of remastered visuals, Gal Weapon Returns looks remarkable to its earlier 2012 PS3 construct, with cleaner, smoother, brighter graphics. The game still suffers from some dull, generic art direction, but it looks much better than ever previously.
Finally, the development team is worthy of credit for one small however innovative function: the “Mommy Walked In” panic button. By pressing the minus button during the action, the game will instantly switch to an inoffensive side-scrolling 8-bit version of itself, in case somebody walks in while you’re playing. Self-awareness is definitely part of the plan in Gal Gun Returns. It’s a game completely cognizant of its outrageous facility and sexualized gameplay. Fan service can only carry a game so far.
